Thugs who viciously assaulted a father-of-two in an attack from which he never recovered have been found guilty of killing him.

Donald McNicol was punched, kicked and hit over the head with a chair in the attack by four youths at a community centre where he had been sitting using a computer.

The 54-year-old underwent neurosurgery at Kings College Hospital for a serious head injury he sustained in the attack on December 2 last year but he never recovered.

His life support was turned off on December 15.

Ibrahim Ford, 17, from Brixton, was found not guilty of murder but convicted of manslaughter.

They will be sentenced on October 31.

Nine men were arrested during the police investigation. Two 17-year-olds and a 27-year-old were later released without charge.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Tim Duffield said: "Mr McNicol was sitting quietly at a desk when this group singled him out and launched a most vicious and cowardly attack. Their actions were completely inexcusable.

"I would like to thank the many people who came forward with information, which is testament to the local community's intolerance of violent crime and the community's willingness to work with the police.

"In contrast to his assailants, Donald was a caring, dignified and thoughtful man.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to his friends and family as they try to come to terms with their loss. I just hope that today's convictions provide them with some small measure of solace."

The judge ordered the jury to acquit Dalton Williams, 19, of Norwich Road, Thornton Heath, and Gino Sawyers, 20, from Bournemouth.
