Delays on the Central Line which led to ‘chaos’ this morning could last all day.

Commuters were ‘stranded’ at Leytonstone Station this morning after the service on the Central Line was suspended.

Hundreds of people were left on platforms and outside the station where arguments broke out and some people are reported to have fainted.

Peter McNaught, Operations Director for Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines said:"The Central line is currently suspended between Marble Arch and Liverpool Street due to a damaged conductor rail in the Chancery Lane area.

“Our engineers are on site working to resolve the problem and resume services as quickly as possible. I apologise to those customers affected by the disruption this morning on the Central line."

Frustrated commuters said they were given 'mixed messages' this morning as they were piled on and then off of trains at Leytonstone.

British Transport Police were called in for 'crowd management' and managed to clear the east bound platform and entrance area by 10.15am.

Transport for London has not confirmed that the problems will be resolved today.

There are also severe delays on the Circle and Hammersmith and City Lines.
