A new councillor is pulling on her running shoes in preparation for a half marathon to raise money for the YMCA.

Councillor Charlie Chirico is hoping to raise £600 for YMCA London South West, alongside its CEO Richard James.

Coun Chirico’s Trinity ward in Wimbledon is where the controversial YMCA development is on The Broadway, but she said she does not support the development.

"I don’t support the building of the YMCA because our residents don’t support any type of vertical expansion. The fact is they are at full capacity," she said.

The pair will join thousands of others running for 13.1 miles past famous landmarks like Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament, before finishing in the stunning location of Hyde Park.

Mr James said: "With the monies raised from the Royal Parks half marathon, YMCA London South West will be able to run more free and subsidised activities across our sites and centres.

"We are especially trying to reach those who lack the resources or opportunities to access fitness centres and ‘traditional’ physical activities."

Coun Chirico is hoping to complete the Royal Parks half marathon on Sunday, October 12, in under two hours having completed the Richmond Park half marathon in one hour 45 minutes in February.
