A parliamentary candidate has joined a campaign to secure a proposed new train line to stop in the borough.

Hannah David, Conservative parliamentay candidate for Harrow West, last week met the Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin MP to discuss the proposed extension of Crossrail through Harrow.

Mr McLoughlin last month announced that the Government is considering plans to extend the Crossrail project to Hertfordshire, with the service stopping at Harrow and Wealdstone Station.

The Conservative parliamentary candidate for Harrow West is now lobbying the government to secure a stop in the borough.

She said: “Connecting Harrow to Crossrail would benefit Wealdstone and the wider area hugely – it’s just what the area needs.

"It will bring huge investment and hundreds of jobs to the area as well as opening up employment opportunities for local people in central London, Watford and beyond.

“I am delighted to be working with the Secretary of State to make this idea a reality and secure a better future for everyone in Harrow.”

Folliwing the meeting, Mr McLoughlin said a station at Harrow and Weald would fit perfectly with the Government's plans to manage London’s growing need for better transport links.

Also backing the calls for the extension of rail project is Labour's London Assembly member for Harrow Navin Shah.

He said: “Connecting these important opportunity areas with the necessary transport infrastructure is vital to ensure that development is done in a way that benefits the local community, and reflects their concerns and their hopes for the area.

“If Harrow and Wealdstone is going to be designated as an opportunity area, it must have upfront funding provision for key infrastructure works like step free access for Harrow-on-the-Hill Station and redevelopment of bus station.”

Crossrail is the biggest engineering project in Europe, costing £15billion.

The project is scheduled to be fully operational in 2019. When finished, it will connect Reading, in Berkshire, to Shenfield in Essex, via central London.

A feasibility study is currently being carried out on the proposals of extending the line which would stop at Harrow and Wealdstone station before moving on to Watford Junction, Berkhamsted and Tring.
