A prolific burglar believed to be responsible for over 150 break-ins may have struck again in Wimbledon Village.

Detectives are keeping an open mind as to whether a man who wears a black fisherman’s hat and has repeatedly raided homes in the borough has struck again.

Police were called to a home in Parkside Gardens in the early hours of Saturday morning after a burglary.

Another nearby home was also broken into around the same time, police said.

The notorious burglar who also wears black clothing has broken into detached properties in the village on numerous occasions since 2006 but has never been caught.

An appeal on Crimewatch in April this year did not lead to any arrests.

Detective Inspector Dan O’Sullivan said: "I am keeping an open mind - it is not a signature burglary.

"We had a lot of jobs up there we thought might have been him and we proved it wasn’t him so we were proved wrong."

Tennis star Boris Becker’s home has been among those targeted in the past, as well as properties in Arthur Road, Bathgate Road and Church Road in Wimbledon.

The burglar is believed to enter properties via doors and windows that are left insecure and may also have a lock-picking device.

The meticulous removal or destruction of security equipment is also one of the burglar's tactics.

A police spokesman said previously that once inside the man will use his jacket and pockets to 'bag' items such as cash and jewellery.

On at least three times he has been disturbed during the burglary.

D Insp O’Sullivan said in the latest raid on Saturday, September 20, the homeowners were not in at the time.
