OXFORD United boss Michael Appleton was disappointed to only pick up a point at Roots Hall.
The former Manchester United trainee was delighted by his side's second half display.
And he also felt it was a 'stonewall' penalty which secured them a share of the spoils.
“We played with fear in the first half so I told them a few home truths at half-time and the second half was as good as I've seen since being here,” said Appleton.
“I feel a little bit hard done by that we haven't won the game and it was nice to finish the game strongly because this is a tough place to come.
“Southend had a bit of a problem with our equaliser.
“But it was a stonewall penalty and the lad has brought him down, end of story.”
