Police and the public remain vigilant this morning after an 82-year-old woman was killed yesterday afternoon.

Neighbours were visibly on edge this morning as they tried to carry out their normal daily routine following the dramatic events that took place yesterday.

Many people were avoiding walking down the stretch of Nightingale Road, taking longer routes to work or the shops so they don’t have to pass the scene.

One woman, who was walking to the shop with her young child and did not wish to be named, said: “We spent last night at home in the dark, with the curtains drawn and the television off. I still can’t believe something like this could happen around here – it’s not even a comfort to know they’ve arrested someone.

“I don’t want my children growing up thinking that this is what people do.”

A young man, who was stood by his scooter on the corner of the road, said that he had been there for close to ten minutes.

He added: “I drive down this road almost every day; I even have a friend that lives on the next road along. It might not be my community and I might not live near here, but when you go through the same place so often something like this is a really big shock.”

The road remains closed while police investigations continue into the incident.
