London taxi drivers plan to bring the capital to a halt next week in a ‘go slow’ protest over an unpopular pollution measure.

They are protesting against the Taxi Age Limit, implemented by Mayor of London Boris Johnson to tackle pollution levels by scrapping older taxis.

The Mayor is due to appear before the Environmental Audit Committee on September 10 to explain why he implemented the limit.

In 2013, research carried out by the Environmental Research Group tested 10,000 taxis, confirming that the new vehicles were contributing more to pollution than the older ones that had been scrapped.

Cabbies Against Boris urge drivers of other trade organisations to support the protest, by ‘going slow’ in central London at 2pm next Tuesday.

The group said: “Why has the mayor needlessly scrapped 3,000 taxis and why does he continue with this improper policy of scrapping taxis which are cleaner than the new taxis?’’
