A gala evening of music and poetry will commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

The Epsom and Ewell Silver Band will perform in a concert which will also feature Epsom Male Voice Choir, Epsom Choral Society, Soundbytes, Ewell Ladies, The Downsmen and Rosebery School Girls' Choir.

When war broke out, a wing at the Grandstand was requisitioned as a hospital.

Injured servicemen were helped onto free seats at the spring meeting of 1916 - the last races held on the Downs for the rest of the war.
