The next stage of a multimillion-pound scheme to improve north Bromley will soon be under way.

Work on Bromley North Village is nearing completion, and the next stage, which will see the Widmore Road junction with Market Square improved, is set to begin in September.

Diversions and delays are expected throughout the project and is planned to run for around four weeks.

Bromley Council says the work is to “improve and provide an economic boost to the historic area” and aims to have everything complete in time for Christmas trading.

Executive councillor for renewal and recreation Peter Morgan said: “We are already encouraged to see new businesses opening, footfall increasing and the outdoor restaurant seating being a real hit in East Street.

“We do appreciate there will be some disruption while this critical phase of work goes ahead but we will be keeping it to a minimum and playing our part to ensure that Bromley remains an enticing place to visit.”

A number of routes through Bromley will be effected by the £5.5m scheme, with some buses using South Street and East Street to access West Street.

East Street was finished earlier this summer and was visited by London mayor Boris Johnson. There’s more information on the plan here.
