Hundreds of people got up close to racehorses and went behind the scenes at Epsom’s training yards on Sunday.

Horses exercised on the gallops at Epsom Downs Racecourse in the morning before nearby racing yards opened their doors to the public.

The day was in aid of Epsom Racing Staff Welfare, which provides affordable accommodation and welfare benefits to racing staff.

Trevor Staplehurst, chairman of the charity, said the event raised £2,500 to go towards its work to help young people coming into racing.

He said: "Racing, the sport of kings, is associated with wealthy people and expensive horses but at the bottom of the tree you have got young people working on relatively low wages to start with.

"It's difficult for them to find accommodation in Surrey. Epsom and Surrey are very expensive places to live. "
