EVERYONE with an interest in the future of the former Starlite Ballroom in Allendale Road, Greenford, is being invited to take part in a demonstration on Saturday against plans to demolish it.

The building first opened in 1935 as the Sudbury Town Odeon but stopped being used as a cinema in 1956.

After dramatic alterations to its façade, it reopened in 1964 as the Starlite Ballroom, hosting shows by artists who became world famous, including The Who, Pink Floyd, The Small Faces, David Bowie and Geno Washington. Following a decade of neglect, the building is scheduled to be demolished and replaced with 39 flats.

Neighbours argue that 14 off-street parking spaces is not enough in an area that is already a Controlled Parking Zone. They would prefer the former venue to be used as a community centre.

Two London Assembly Members Darren Johnson (Green, Londonwide) and Dr Onkar Sahota (Labour, Ealing and Hillingdon), support of the campaign.

The demonstration will start at 1pm on Saturday (August 30) in Allendale Road, Greenford, UB6 0RA, outside the Starlite.

The nearest Underground station is Sudbury Town and the closest bus route in the 487, which stops at Allendale Road.
