Plans to build a McDonald’s drive-through restaurant in Palmers Green have been rejected.

Campaigners were delighted to hear the news that Enfield Borough Council had rejected MacDonald’s application to build a two-storey restaurant with a drive-through on Bowes Road.

The multi-million pound franchise had its plans dashed last year and will have to go back to the drawing board once more.

Enfield Southgate MP David Burrowes, who has backed the campaign to keep the fast food store off Bowes Road, said that the drive-through would not have helped with regeneration of the area.

He said: “I am pleased council officers rejected the McDonald’s application which would have been too near to schools. The council needs to urgently come up with a deliverable plan to regenerate the area before McDonald’s and others fill the void.”

The area is mentioned in the North Circular Area Action Plan, a scheme to help regenerate the area surrounding Bowes Road.

In a statement detailing the rejections for the proposal, the council revealed the McDonald’s plans were “contrary to the regeneration objectives".

He reads: “The proposals would prejudice the future development of the extended Bowes Road local centre as envisaged in the North Circular Area Action Plan with its key objectives to increase  commercial viability of the centre for existing and mix of new businesses and community facilities.

“The proposed provision of a fast food restaurant in close proximity to Broomfield primary and secondary schools would be contrary to national and local policy aims and objectives to encourage more healthier lifestyles and communities.

“The proposals are contrary to the regeneration objectives and site allocation of the North Circular Area Action Plan.”

The list of reasons for refusal also included a lack of on-site parking and insufficient evidence on predicted rises in traffic.
