A merry band of walkers has raised thousands for charity after a coast-to-coast walk.

More than £2,500 was raised by a retired media lawyer, accompanied by his brother-in-law, their wives, a baby and two highland terriers.

Colin Campbell, 67, of Spinney Gardens, Esher, walked 192 miles in 13 days from August 3 to August 15, and completed a long-held ambition.

His brother-in-law, Ken Goldsbrough, 56, walked the entirety of the journey alongside Mr Campbell, with their wives, Ken's 10-month-old daughter, Catherine, and the two dogs, Hector and Bonnie, taking part in some sections of the long walk.

The Coast to Coast walk stretches from St Bees on the Cumbrian Coast, through the Lake District and into the Yorkshire Dales, finishing on the Yorkshire coast at Robin Hood's Bay.

Mr Campbell is a regular player of hockey and tennis but admitted that more training could have been done before embarking on the adventure.

He said: "We did do a couple of walks from Esher to Hampton Court before but it's quite tough and I'd say I'd be surprised if anyone did not find it tough."

For the first three days they walked about 15 miles each day with Mr Campbell commenting that "a lot of up-ing and down-ing" throughout the Lake District section was quite challenging.

The trip was all in aid of raising money for Sportability, a charity that provides sporting opportunities for people with paralysis, for which Mr Campbell is a trustee.

Additionally, funds will be going towards Street Child Africa, an organisation that helps homeless children in six countries in sub-Saharan Africa to find homes.
