An arson attack and assault on a staff member have left a pub facing a licence review.

Kingston police have requested the licence of the Royal Oak at 90 Coombe Road, New Malden, be reviewed after six allegations of crime, also including burglary, between July 28, 2013, and July 12, 2014.

The pub, part of the Spirit Pub Company, based in Staffordshire, does not have any CCTV cameras.

Former ward councillor Lynne Finnerty said: "As a ward councillor up until May or as a regular at safer neighbourhood panel meetings I was not aware of any of these problems or incidents.

"I’m surprised that I would not be aware of any issues to do with the premises - especially with crimes of that nature."

A spokesman from Kingston police’s licensing team said: "Following a number of incidents including burglary, arson and assault at the Royal Oak public house between July 2013 and July 2014 we have requested that the management install CCTV on the premises to assist on the prevention of crime and disorder."

But a redacted licensing document on Kingston Council’s website said although some security measures had been addressed, the pub would not consider adding cameras.

It said: "Police have been advised that CCTV will not be installed as it is the licence holder’s senior management’s view that its presence would not have prevented any of the incidents that have recently occurred."

The licensing document concluded: "The review of the licence has been requested to address the failure of the management at the premises and the failure to ensure the licensing objectives are upheld."

A spokesmsan for Spirit Pub Company said: "While we’re disappointed that the Royal Oak licence is to be reviewed, we are confident that the security measures we have put in place over the past year are more than adequate to ensure the safety of our guests, team and property and anticipate that the results of the review will confirm that."

A date has not yet been set for the hearing.

Mind the gap says...

Having visited this pub recently and looking around at some of the Clientele, I'm not really surprised.
