Police have confirmed they are hunting two blood-spattered Polish burglars, after an "extremely violent" attack in Wimbledon left a man with life-changing injuries.

Paul Kohler, 55, is undergoing eye surgery at a south London hospital after being brutally beaten.

Four smartly dressed men wearing Balaclavas entered his Kings Road home on Monday night.

One man has been charged with aggravated burglary and GBH.

At a press conference in the past hour police confirmed many more details of the shocking incident.

These included the fact that two men, not one as previously reported, escaped when the police swooped.

A large kitchen knife was found afterwards in the street.

Mr Kohler and his wife, who are newly-weds, were in their £2m semi-detached house, near to South Park Gardens, when there was a knock at the door at about 10pm.

When he opened it the four men rushed in and one immediately started beating him around the body and head in the hallway demanding: "Where is the money?"

His wife, who is 50, was threatened by the other two who attempted to tape her down to a chair using gaffer tape.

But police revealed that their son and daughter, who are in their 20s, were upstairs at the time and managed to lock themselves in before dialling 999.

Officers arrived within minutes and arrested two men in their late twenties, one in the house and one in a street nearby.

Police are still hunting the other two and have released CCTV video of a suspect running off from the Broadway into traffic and towards New Wimbledon Theatre.

Speaking at the press conference Detective Inspector Dan O'Sullivan said it is believed all four were Polish and may have arrived in the country recently.

He said the burglary was pre-planned and financially motivated, although there appears to be no clear reason why the family was targeted.

He said surgeons would have to "reconfigure" Mr Kohler's face after his eye socket and forehead were smashed by fists.

Det Insp O'Sullivan said there was blood everywhere in the hallway and the men who ran off would have been covered in it.

A large kitchen knife was found in Kings Road and two laptops and iphones stolen from the family were recovered in Palmerston Road.

Mariusz Tomaszewski, 32, of Cursoe Road, Mitcham, has been charged with aggravated burglary and GBH.

He appeared for the first time this morning at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court and will next appear at Kingston Crown Court on Wednesday, August 27

The other arrested man has not been charged but remains in police custody being questioned.

Neighbours in the street are shocked by what has happened and one said he was stepping up security measures at his house as a result.

A family friend said: "They are a lovely family, really normal and it’s such a shock that this has happened."

I am a Pole living in London for almost 10 years. This is a shocking act of violence. My thoughts are with the assaulted man and his family. I hope they will be given lengthy prison sentences adequate to the gravity of the crime.

Would like Mr Kohler and his family to know this has disgusted the whole local community and he is a very brave man. Hats off to you in the way you are coping with this.
