Ancient Roman artefacts unearthed in Sutton are to be put on display during a new show curated by the Museum of London.

Visitors to the free exhibit will be invited to see, and in some cases handle, local archaeological finds over three days at the Whitgift Centre in Croydon

The star attractions returning to South London will be a number of Roman items found in Beddington, where a large villa complex with bathhouses and barns was discovered during the 1980s, as well as a number of relics dating back to the Iron Age.

Finds from this area include well-preserved women’s brooches and rings, household items including cooking pots and bowls, and a variety of tools.

The Museum of London is also looking for a small group of volunteers from the Croydon and Sutton area, to learn about and handle the artefacts over six weeks, before helping to prepare for the exhibition.

Adam Corsini, collections manager at the Museum of London, said: "The archaeological remains from this site are some of the most important to be discovered from the late Roman period."

We’re looking forward to involving South London’s residents in preserving their local history."

The exhibit runs from October 24-26 at the Whitgift Centre.
