The leader of Hounslow Council has come out in support of the campaign to take the Gloriana to Brentford.

Councillor Steve Curran described the town as the "rightful berth" for the Queen's Row Barge, after plans to house it in Twickenham were met with opposition.

Richmond Council's plans for a boathouse and visitor centre have provoked anger and outrage from campaigners who want to protect the Orleans Park site.

Coun Curran said: "We are more than happy to support the campaign to bring the Gloriana back to its rightful berth in Brentford.

"It was built here, launched just up river in Isleworth, and it would be a great addition to the town’s regeneration as a tourist attraction with real local links.

"We will work with the Brentford Chamber of Commerce and all relevant authorities to help make this happen."

Richmond Council leader Lord True continued to express his desire not to lose the boat, built for the diamond jubilee in 2012, to the neighbouring borough.

Master boatbuilder Mark Edwards, from Richmond, assembled team of craftsmen to build the hull and the coach in a secret location in Brentford before it was launched in Isleworth.

Last week, Eel Pie islanders called on the council to consider using Phoenix Wharf, on the island, as a permanent home for the Gloriana.

There are two weeks of the council's consultation remaining.
