A controlled explosion was carried out on a wartime shell found in Greenhithe.

Bomb disposal experts were called at 10.30am on August 12 to reports of an unexploded device found at Johnson’s Wharf at the Lafarge cement works in Charles Street.

A team from the Royal Logistics Corps attended and the device, thought to be from the Second World War, was detonated at around 2pm.

Police established a cordon at the site near the Asda superstore which was removed once the explosion had been carried out.
