Armed police stopped a car in Catford, smashed into it and arrested two men in an afternoon operation, witnesses say.

Shocked drivers and children outside looked on as the police stopped the vehicle in Bromley Road at around 3.30pm on Friday (August 1).

A spokesman for the Met Police would not reveal why the car was stopped.

He said: "The stop was part of an ongoing investigation.

"Two men were arrested in connection with the investigation and are currently in custody.

"No shots were discharged during the incident and there were no injuries.

"At this time, and for operational reasons, we are not prepared to discuss the investigation further."
