A remembrance service will mark the beginning of the events planned in Sutton to commemorate the centenary of WWI. Poppies floating on the pond and a symbolic ringing of church bells by All Saints Church in Carshalton will follow the ceremony.

As part of a nationwide campaign, members of Sutton are invited to switch off their lights to mark the hour Britain first entered the war 100 years ago.

A vigil service will take place in Cheam. After the ceremony all of the names on the town’s war memorial will be read out.

A drumhead service will take place on the anniversary of England joining the war. The army tradition sees drums stacked on each other and draped in the regimental colours or the national flag. It will be followed by a candlelit vigil service.
