A council chamber was filled to the brim this evening for a public meeting on a multi-million pound cycling scheme.

The public meeting on cycle Enfield (formerly known as mini-Holland) was organised by Enfield Town Conservation Area Study Group with guest speaker and transport expert Ben Hamilton-Baillie giving his views on changing transport.

Admitting he had only been in Enfield for one day, Mr Hamilton-Baillie told the audience that the scheme should focus around the market place in the town.

In a sometimes humorous presentation, the expert also suggested removed the ‘clutter’ of traffic signals and lights that surrounded most of Enfield Town.

The scheme has so far been criticised by residents in Cecil Road, Enfield, which could be turned into a two-way street.

However, despite residents raising their concerns at the meeting, Mr Hamilton-Baillie has no role to play in the design of the Cycle Enfield project.

Consultation is set to take place in the coming months as proposals are finalised.

Clare Hansen, a member of the voluntary group that organised the meeting said: “I was surprised to see so many people show up but that’s how important it is to the people of Enfield.”

Ms Hansen added that the voluntary group will host a meeting with Transport for London’s cycling commissioner Andrew Gilligan.
