An elderly woman has been found dead after a fire tore through a home in Chessington.

Seven fire engines and 35 firefighters battled to put out the fire in Moor Lane.

A man in his 90s was rescued from the house by a neighbour before the fire engines arrived shortly after 5.30pm and he was taken to hospital with burns.

London Fire Brigade said breathing apparatus crews found the body of an elderly woman, also believed to be in her 90s, in the semi-detached house.

The fire was finally put out at 7.17pm with a neighbouring property also damaged.

Police said they were called at 5.30pm. The neighbouring houses had been evacuated.

A woman was found dead inside the semi-detached house, police said. Her next of kin had been told of her death.

A spokesman for London Ambulance said: "We were called just before 5.45pm to reports of a fire on Moor Lane in Chessington.
“We sent an ambulance crew, members of our hazardous area response team and an officer to the scene.
“Sadly, a woman died at the scene.
“Our staff also treated one patient for minor injuries and they were taken to hospital. A second person was also checked over but they didn't require hospital treatment”
