The leader of the council has been attacked for consulting on proposals to bring back the role of chief executive.

Last week the council announced it would be consulting on reinstating the most senior officer at Harrow Borough Council after it was scrapped last year.

The authority will be talking to council employees, school staff, union members and councillors over the proposals.

Reacting to the announcement Tory group leader Susan Hall said: "It says a lot about Labour, and particularly Cllr Perry, that they consider potentially bringing back a chief executive to be priority.

“It's a sign of their inability to make decisions, their constant need for reassurance, and their lack of decisiveness at the top level - a problem made worse by Cllr Perry only working two days a week as leader of the council."

Cllr Perry said: “It’s very disappointing that Susan Hall has resorted to personal attacks instead of discussing and debating the issue of the senior management structure.

“We now have to deal with the void that has been left by her and the previous Tory administration and we campaigned and said we would hold a proper consultation.

“I think it's laughable that Susan Hall, after not carrying out a proper consultation when she deleted the role, has to attack me personally for conducting a full and proper consultation.”

Recommendations could go before members later this year but until any permanent arrangements are made Paul Najsarek, interim head of paid service, will continue to lead the council at officer level.
