This Is Local London: Woman walks 52 miles for deafblind charity Woman walks 52 miles for deafblind charity

A woman from Harrow walked 52 miles to raise money for deafblind children and adults.

Jackie Bowls took part in the RidgeWalk, a cross country hike following the Ridgeway, which is the oldest and one of the most scenic national trails in the UK.

The hike, which has to be completed in 24 hours, starts at midday and involves trekking through the night to finish by midday the following day.

Jackie and her husband Jason crossed the finish line at 8.45am, more than three hours ahead of schedule.

Jackie was inspired to take part in the RidgeWalk to raise money for Sense, the national deafblind charity as she works in the fundraising department.

She said: “I had previously run four marathons, cycled from London to Brighton and taken part in various other sporting events.

"But I was looking for a new challenge, something completely different. RidgeWalk appealed as it ticked all the boxes, plus I was able to raise money for Sense at the same time.”

Jackie trained intensely, walking and running several miles a week to prepare for the RidgeWalk. The support from her team of four also kept her motivated till the end when it got tough.

She said: “The not so nice bits were the blisters and the hard rutted paths that seemed to go on forever. We got through it though; we helped each other when things got a bit too hard. And having the countryside to ourselves while walking through the night was fantastic.”
