A football tournament was among an array of activities on offer at a community fun day.

Youth charity Art Against Knives and Grange Big Local organised the Grange Championship League football tournament, which took place in the green off Brownswell Road yesterday afternoon.

Teams aged seven to 11, 12 to15, and 16 to 25 took part in the four-a-side football tournament with prizes for the winners and a special football for all those who took part.

The event was held as a way to find out with members of the community want to see in their town, after a £1 million donation has been allocated to the area through the Grange Big Local project.

Emily Burnham, who works with the project, said: “This has been an event for people to come together, get to know each other and have a good time. But we have also been walking around with questionnaires to find out what people what to see in the town. You stop people on the street and they don’t know what to say, but when you bring them together like this they can come up with better ideas.”

Just under 100 questionnaires were filled out during the event, with ‘Astroturf’ featuring highly among suggestions.

Mrs Burnham’s son Rees, 10, was part of the winning team for his age group in the tournament. He said: “Winning was great. It was good to know that all that hard work practising had paid off.”

Music, bouncy castles, a nail bar, T-shirt printing, a graffiti workshop and face-painting were also available throughout the day.

As the event was organised to provide more for young people to do in the area, all activities on offer were free.

Rees Lyon added: “I think the best part of today was that you didn’t have to pay for anything, you felt like you had total freedom.”

Art Against Knives worker Katy Dawe added: “It is always really important for us to work with existing groups of charities, and in this case it has worked really well.

“For me, this event marks a signal of something happening in the area- the community getting involved in what they want to happen here.”
