Cuts to front-line services are coming, the council has warned, but you will be given the chance to shape how the changes are made.

Sutton Council has launched a campaign dubbed Sutton's Future in response to continuing pressures on its budget.

The drive will give people the chance to influence how the council makes cuts in its spending - but Councillor Ruth Dombey, leader of the council, has warned that the cuts will affect people's day-to-day lives.

Cuts in Government grants mean the council was challenged to cut £72m from its budget between 2011 and 2018.

Already it has trimmed its annual budget by £32m to £152m but it still has to find further savings of £40m.

Coun Dombey said: "We knew in 2011 that we had to make savings and we've made some tough choices but, if you talk to people, they haven't really noticed.

"We've made these savings doing things differently. We've cut our workforce by 500, we've used technology more we have a lot more shared services with other boroughs.

"But we've still got to save another £40m having done all this work, so now we have to have a different conversation with people.

"We have statutory services that we have to provide but there are hundreds more that we don't have to provide by law and now we have choices to make."

To help the council make those choices, it has launched Sutton's Future.

The scheme will let people visit a website where they will be able to find out about the council's budgets and influence the decisions that are being made.

There will also be a series of meetings, public displays and people without internet access will be able to take part through newsletters.

Councillor Dombey said no decisions as to what services are at risk and that it will depend on what people say via Sutton's Future.

She added: "We believe that local people know what is best for their local area and we want people to get involved in Sutton's Future to help us find  answers."

Maybe if the Council made the cuts in the right place front line services will be preserved?
The Council is top heavy with management and people on vastly inflated salaries for the jobs they actually do
My neighbour , after 30 years in the real world, worked for Sutton on contract for 2 years and could not believe the number of people sitting around not doing anything - meetings for meetings sake to justify their roles by churning out endless paper trails - sickness at levels she had never seen before
In fact we deserve a real cut in the Council Tax here - we have had 30 years of waste and nothing to show for it on the plus side.
Dont be fooled by the old trick of asking us for our opinion - they will have decided what is to be cut already

Absolutely correct on every point. Overpaid Exec's their support staff, multitudes of managerial and supervisory staff, all using taxpayer funded vehicles, normally seen loading groceries in Tesco's carpark. Obscene wastage on plastic projects. You can only kick a man, or woman, so often and when the stone stops bleeding. These three parties ( lying Lib-Dems, spend spend spend Labour and can't make my mind up Conservatives) have created this mess, They are the reason for the tragic decline of our quality of life and infrastructure. We can change this by removing them and their rich sponsers and returning power to the people with their feet on the ground the real people , you me and joe...

What a joke, I saw this advertised on the back of a bus whilst travelling through Putney, and I couldn't help thinking, why is my council tax paying for an advert on the back end of a bus telling the good people of Putney that my services in Sutton are going to be cut.
I suggest if the council wish to save money, they stop paying for advertising space on buses.

I've a great idea to save money. Why not make the over zealous and arrogant traffic wardens that patrol up and down my road do some road sweeping at the same time. On Manor Park Road where I live the wardens just hang doing nothing more than waiting to ticket peoples cars yet the road is covered in litter. Why do the council spend money on traffic wardens but not on street cleaners? Let me guess.

People of Sutton you deserve everything you get with this as you not only voted the LibDems back in against the country trend but you gave them an even bigger and even more powerful majority. All this despite their clear incompetence and waste on pet projects one after the other.
I am not a betting man but I would put my house on the Life Centre bailout funding continuing probably at the expense of some vital social service somewhere.
These guys don't care about consultation and never had it is a smoke and mirrors exercise.
When will Sutton ever learn

The Lib Dems have tied our Borough into an ever increasing spiral of debt and waste, PR exercises and cuts to essential services. People deserve better than this- so let's make sure we challenge and hold them to account every step of the way. It's OUR money they're wasting!
