Drunk racially motivated attacker escapes jail after serious Wimbledon incident
A drunk racially motivated attacker was fined and given a suspended jail sentence after a assaulting a man in Wimbledon town centre.
Simon Connell, 50, of Turnpike Lane, Sutton, admitted verbally abusing and assaulting Mr Ali by beating him, and being drunk in a public place, namely Tesco in Wimbledon town centre.
The incident happened on Tuesday, June 17 in South Park Road, Wimbledon, where Connell used words causing the victim harassment, alarm or distress which were found to be racially motivated.
For the assault charge Connell was committed to prison for eight weeks, suspended for 12 months because the offence was deemed serious by magistrates in Wimbledon.
He was ordered to pay compensation of £150, and a victim surcharge of £80.
For the charge of intending to cause harassment, alarm or distress to the victim, Connell was committed to prison for four weeks suspended for 12 months to run consecutively to the assault offence.
There was no separate penalty for the drinking charge.
He appeared before magistrates in Wimbledon on Monday, June 30.
