Scores of people huddled under umbrellas to take shelter from the rain during a “marvellous” community festival.

Live music rang out across Oak Hill Park, in Churchill Road, East Barnet, at this year’s annual East Barnet Festival.

The bright lights of the funfair filled the park as children enjoyed the rides and games on offer.

Although storm clouds brewing in the sky threatened to grind the event to a halt, organiser Barry Ainsworth said it was a “huge success”.

Two years ago, he was forced to cancel the event after heavy rain, but this year he was determined the unpredictable weather would not stand in the way of the event.

He said: “There’s quite a big crowd today, there’s been a fantastic atmosphere so far so it can only get better.

“It’s been a long time in the planning but from the way things are going, it’s all been a lot of fun so it’s worth it.

“It’s all about making people laugh, and making sure they leave with a smile on their faces.”

Music from medieval band Perkelt, as well as The Haunting and Bruce Springsteen Tribute band, also entertained crowds of people.

Dance clubs including Lemon Jelly Arts, 360 Arts and Theatre Train also held performances throughout the day.

Although it began pouring with rain at around 2pm, it did not stop little ones from having their faces painted, eating ice-creams and going on the rides.

Lillie-May Tucker, four, said: “My favourite part was winning a really huge teddy bear. I had my face painted like a butterfly princess. It’s been a really really fun day.”

Anne Weston said: “The highlight of the day has been the live music – it’s been marvellous. It’s such a nice way to bring the community together.”
