Putting yourself through a gruelling sports challenge might not be everyone’s idea of fun – but one politician is putting his stamina to the test in a triathlon.

Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas will take part in the event to raise money for the Parkinson’s Disease Society and the Harrow Law Centre.

Mr Thomas has set himself the ambitious target of raising £1,000 for the two causes and has so far been pleased with the response he has had.

He said he feels a special connection to the Parkinson’s Disease Society as his father was diagnosed with the condition.

He said: “The charity has a big impact on people at the end of their lives, as the disease gradually reduces the control the person has over their body”.

He also said that Harrow Law Centre is key to the community as it helps people with financial support and legal advice. He said he is “grateful for the support” that he received as an MP.

In order to prepare for the biggest triathlon in the UK Mr Thomas has taken part in two other triathlons and has been frequently cycling in North Harrow, Hatch End and Pinner and running in Harrow on the Hill.

Mr Thomas said he was excited for the event and is enjoying the training. He added: “Having to get up early to fit training in with work is challenging as an MP.

“I am looking forward to getting back to a normal routine again."
