Carers, social workers, refuse collectors, street cleaners and teaching assistants will march through Waltham Forest later this month over anger that many are ‘struggling to make ends meet’.

A strike organised by UNISON will see a picket line formed at the Town Hall in Forest Road on July 10.

Workers will gather between 7am and 9.30am before moving onto Walthamstow Town Square for a rally with the other unions.

At around 11am members will be moving on to the demonstration in Central London, which assembles at BBC Broadcasting House and marches to Trafalgar Square at noon.

According to UNISON, council workers in Waltham Forest have been left struggling to get by, with some relying on food banks, second jobs and in-work benefits to make ends meet.

UNISON is urging the employers to get back to the negotiating table.

Branch secretary at Waltham Forest, Dave Knight said: “Council workers have kept on going in the face of four years of draconian Government cuts to keep local services in Waltham Forest running.

“They care for our elderly and our vulnerable, keep our streets clean and educate and look after our children. They deserve better treatment than they have had at the hands of this Government.

“Taking strike action is never easy but our members are sending a clear message to the Government that they have had enough. Low paid women make up the backbone of most local councils and they deserve to be paid a decent wage.”

UNISON is asking for a £1.20 an hour minimum increase for all.
