A girl from Orpington is to star in a new TV show after becoming a "real-life Mary Poppins" at a prestigious childcare college.

Laura Styles, 20, completed this year a £13,000-a-year course at Norland College, Bath – a 120-year-old institution where tight buns and white gloves remain.

Miss Styles, who before attending studied at Orpington College, is one of 43 others who were followed by ITV cameras for six months while undergoing training.

Now off to begin her career with a family in Kensington, the documentary, titled ‘Britain’s Poshest Nanny’, will give the public an insight into what is required.

Miss Styles told News Shopper: "I’m so excited, I can’t wait. I’ve always wanted to work with children and my nan said, ‘if you’re going to be a nanny, you need to be the best’.

"The training is quite tough, it’s so traditional. We have to learn about cooking, cleaning, absolutely everything – we even had self-defence training so we can protect the children."

Miss Styles is one of the main girls featured in the show and said at first the cameras were a little daunting, but got used to them eventually.

She explained: "It was really good, being filmed. At first it was quite nerve-wracking but by the end I forgot they were there.

"I got to know all the crew and we’re all friends. And all the nannies are really close now."

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are known for having chosen a Norland Nanny to care for the country’s youngest Royal, Prince George.

While not all the nannies end up caring for quite such high-profile parents, all go on to lead lives looking after the youngsters of society's rich and glamorous.

The college was founded in 1892 by Emily Ward and is famous for upholding Victorian etiquette and rules – traditional uniform, impeccable manners, and tea and cake are held in high regard.

Miss Styles’ mum, Paula, 44, said she is "immensely proud of her daughter," and added: "She’s just been given her first post. She’s done so well".

Britain’s Poshest Nannies will be broadcast on Thursday July 17 at 9pm.
