The headteacher of a controversial academy school has hit back at critics.

Harris Primary Academy Philip Lane, formerly Downhills Primary, was the focus of a campaign against the government’s education policy after it was converted to academy status in 2012 despite resistance from its governors.

The principal of the school, which was recently rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in its first full inspection, says its results speak for themselves.

Kirstie Fulthorpe, who joined the new academy in December 2012, said: “With any education system or type of school, it has to be about doing things right for the community, the children and the families.

“Our school is doing well. The children are happy and the staff are happy – my staff are almost all staying on to teach at the school, and that’s something I’m really pleased about.

“I’ve got one teacher who’s retiring, but other than that, they’re all staying with us.”

She added: “I think I’ve been able to achieve my aims with the support of the Harris Foundation.

“I can’t comment on whether they’re more supportive than a council would be, because I’ve never worked with Haringey Council.”

Ms Fulthorpe, who says she has always worked in “school improvement”, praised the “enthusiasm and aspiration” of the children, adding that the school had big plans.

She said: “We’re really excited about the coming year, we’ve got some new trips planned and we’re making changes to the curriculum.”

Tottenham Resident says...

As an ex-governor of Downhills Primary School, I for one, am delighted that the school has achieved good in the latest Ofsted report. all parents want their children to attend a good school and as a Tottenham resident I want to see all our schools good or outstanding. I am also pleased to hear that the school staff have high expectations for all the pupils. Unfortunately, this was not the case when the school was Downhills Primary. We had some very good individual governors, who challenged the leadership of the school but those governors were in a minority. Also we were not told the true position of the school regarding school improvement. Obviously, I would have liked the school to have stayed a community school but this was not possible. I happen to think as a Local Authority Haringey is stronger now and the decline of the school would not be allowed to happen now.
I wish the head teacher and the school staff every success for the future and most importantly I wish the children to be successful.
Any one who care about children can only be pleased with this Ofsted report.

Those people who opposed the school becoming an independent academy school are proved wrong and are a disgrace. This good Ofsted report shows the academy is doing better than the school did under Haringey Council control.
The NUT, most of the old school's teachers, Labour councillors and local left wing activists should apologise for wanting to block this improvement to the children's education.
Political activists like them have damaged the education of thousands of children in Haringey for the last 40 years with their trendy, progressive teaching methods. Haringey has had an abysmal record in school league tables for decades. Now Ofsted and the Academy system is boosting results!
