Chance for young people to take to the East Surrey airwaves

First published in News

Young people wanting to take to the airwaves have a golden opportunity this summer thanks to a Redhill radio station.

Redstone FM, which is based in Cromwell Road, is to run a summer radio project for young people who live in the borough.

The project, a series of training sessions, will lead to an opportunity to broadcast on Redstone FM’s evening show.

The course has come about after the station was awarded a grant from Surrey County Council to run the project, in partnership with Raven Housing Trust.

Raven has stated it is committed to supporting young people to develop life-long skills and abilities, and be active members of their communities. The training sessions will be run at the Horley Young People’s Centre in Albert Road, which has a well-equipped radio studio.

Amy Harrison, Redstone FM’s youth coordinator, who will be running the project, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for local teenagers to get some hands-on experience with a live radio station. “This project is part of our objective to develop new talent and the next generation of broadcasters.” Young people interested in the project can find out more at an open meeting at the Horley Young People’s Centre on Tuesday, July 8, at 7pm.

There will be an opportunity to sign up for the project at the meeting.

Redstone FM broadcasts on Digital Radio (DAB) from studios based in Redhill and operates as a not-for-profit social enterprise, with one of its core aims being to offer opportunities for young people. Redstone FM can be heard throughout the whole Surrey DAB digital licence area, which covers the whole of the county and parts of South and South-west London and North Sussex, although its core area is the boroughs of Reigate and Banstead and Epsom and Ewell, plus Mole Valley and Tandridge districts.
