A woman in her 60s was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Abbey Wood this morning.

The incident happened in Finchale Road near the roundabout with Eynsham Drive at around 11am when the pedestrian was hit by a Ranger Rover.

Ambulance crews and an air ambulance attended but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car fled on foot after mounting the pavement and smashing into the pedestrian along with some bollards and a road sign.

Graham Stone, 65, was trimming a tree in the grounds of the adjacent Weybourne care home 20 metres from the roundabout when he heard a loud screeching sound.

The maintenance man told News Shopper: “The Range Rover came away from the roundabout and ploughed into the bollards.

“I didn’t see anyone jump out of the car because I was looking at all the smoke coming out of the bonnet.

“Somebody shouted out ‘don’t let him get away’. It all happened so quickly.

“I didn’t realise somebody was underneath the vehicle.

“It must have been the person I saw walking on the pavement just a split second before the car came.”

The hit and run driver careered into the Finchale Road sign before killing a pedestrian.

A blue police tarpaulin covered the stretch of pavement where the victim was struck while the Range Rover’s hazard lights were still blinking.

Police established a wide cordon across streets surrounding the block of flats immediately by the crime scene.

A Met Police spokesman said: "The male driver of the car made off from the scene on foot and enquiries are underway to trace him.

"Officers from Greenwich attended the scene and the incident will be investigated by officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit."

No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

Crime is shooting up around there. This is not hyperbole - I've never seen so much or been told so much (from very reliable people not just hearsay). I'm not sure if some dodgy people have recently moved in (possibly from other estates being redeveloped?) but it's gone up a hell of a lot the past 6 months.

Just yesterday armed police arrested someone with a firearm nearby. The Met Police helicopter wrote about it as they were in support. Over the past few weeks I've seen and been told about various assaults, criminal damage, and lots of anti social behaviour. Of the things I know about not one person reported it so the stats wont show it. Maybe I should in future though know how pointless that can be.

The police and council need to do something fast. Stop abandoning the town. Crack down hard. Check people moving in if council tenants and if they are causing problems don't dump them there. I even saw people throw rocks at a PCSO who rode off and did nothing. Also the police need to do something about all the illegal drivers.

Maybe these people were from out of town and nothing to do with Abbey Wood. However, it follows recent patterns of things getting worse.

Not sure what relevance the rising crime rate has to do with this incident

There were reports it was stolen, and follows a pattern of ever increasing crime in very recent times in the area. It seems to be becoming a bit lawless around there at times. The police need to get a handle on things.

Plus even if not stolen the driver must have been illegal as why run - the details would be on record.

Plus in the pics the rear number plate is not there. Maybe this happened after, or maybe someone was driving around without one. I have seen this around there, along with many other illegal acts which seem to be ignored.

Just to add - tonight I saw 2 people on a motorbike driving on footpaths (well away from roads) without lights in Abbey Wood. This was during the England game and they looked very dodgy. Stuff like that is so common now.

If anyone knows who the hit and run driver, please let the police know. I've know the victim all my life and cannot begin to tell you the pain the family & friends are going through. Her poor 2 daughters and partner have had they're mum, best friend & girlfriend taken from them and for what. RIP Aunty B. Our lives are not going to be the same without you. I just can't believe your gone.
