Firefighters were called to a blaze at the back of a school in Richmond last night.

The fire, believed to be in the roof of part of Christ’s School, saw six engines attend the building in Queen’s Road shortly before 10.30pm.

Four engines were originally called but the officer in charge from Richmond called for support when he saw the size of the fire.

Appliances from Richmond and Chiswick, as well as two each from Twickenham and Kingston were on hand to tackle the blaze.

The school is open today, June 18, and the fire has not affected the normal school day.

Headteacher Helen Dixon said: "I can confirm that a fire broke out last night, June 17, on the roof of the new building at Christ’s School.

"The authorities were alerted to the fire by residents in the area and the damage was contained to only the roof.

“I can confirm that no one was injured in the fire and the fire brigade have secured the whole site swiftly.

"We have been given the all clear to open the school today and no lessons or student activity will be impacted by the incident.

"We are now working closely with the experts to identify the cause of the fire.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
