A pub landlord saved the day after building work at Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School threatened plans for this year’s summer fair.
Construction recently began at the school to create two new classrooms, which will be used to accommodate a three-form entry for reception from September.
Unable to find an alternative venue for the fair and preparing to cancel the annual fundraising event, Margaret Henriksson, chairwoman of the school’s PTA, approached Phil Connelly, landlord of the Ditton pub.
After a two-day wait, the school was delighted to hear it would be able to use the pub's garden and preparations began for the fair.
More than 250 people attended the fair on Saturday, June 14, which was filled with stalls and activities including a bouncy castle, face painting, shoot the cans and magic show.
Estate agents Matthew James sponsored the fair, with co-owner James Batty helping to judge the build a Lego house competition, which had entries from children throughout the school.
Monica Paines, headteacher of Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School, said: "In true community spirit the Ditton pub saved the day and the school PTA committee did a fantastic job making it a fun filled day for everyone."
Funds will go toward equipment all children could benefit from, including new library furniture, books and sports equipment.
