A man who admitted stealing electricity to grow cannabis has avoided jail.

Unemployed Jonathon Smith, of Boscombe Avenue in Leyton, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday.

The 49-year-old was handed a four-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work.

He is also required to pay £80 in victim surcharge costs.

Smith pleaded guilty at Thames Magistrates Court on April 9 to abstracting electricity without authority and producing a class B drug.

He was arrested on January 7 following a police raid on his home.

He avoids gaol which is why he steals electric and grows cannabis in the first place!

They only gaol OAP's for not paying their council tax and TV licence.

Get up to speed Vollidge - you cannot go to jaol for non payment of the TV licence.

Tax is a different matter - your beloved state will always take non payment seriously.

This guy grew some plants and ripped off £80. Not worthy of a jaol sentence

No need Cornbelly - I scored some quality gear off Jonathon before he got busted.

Also, Parliament voted to remove the threat of jail to TV licence evaders on March 24th.
