Randy, foul-mouthed puppets will be reprising classic musical numbers such as 'I'm not wearing underwear today' and 'Everyone's a little bit racist' when the raucous Avenue Q comes to Kingston this month.

The Cygnet Players will bring their adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway show to Kingston College's Arthur Cotterell Theatre, from June 25 to 28.

The decidedly adult musical puppet show tells the story of recent college graduate Princeton, who moves into a ramshackle New York apartment on Avenue Q.

There he meets his next door neighbour Kate Monster, closet homosexual Republican Rod and the internet pornography addict Trekkie Monster, to name but a few of the colourful characters.

Avenue Q is distinct from other musicals in its use of puppetry, which sees puppeteers share the stage with the other performers, although it is played out as if they are invisible.

With the cast having to act, sing and control the puppets all at the same time, putting on a show of such complexity is not easy.

That's why the group has enlisted the help of former Avenue Q cast member Sam Harrison, who has been mentoring the cast and providing puppet workshops to help bring the characters to life.

Director Katy Goddard said: "Sam’s guidance has been a real insight into the preparation and attention to detail that is required of a professional production and the whole team has risen beautifully to the challenge.

"The cast, production team and committee have worked tirelessly to ensure that Cygnet Players’ Avenue Q will do justice to this hilarious modern-day classic."

Avenue Q, Arthur Cotterell Theatre, Kingston College, Kingston Hall Road, Kingston Wednesday 25th to Saturday 28th June, 7.30pm (Saturday matinee 2.30pm).
