Cobham Free School has been given a ‘good’ rating in its first Ofsted inspection, less than two years after opening.

The Portsmouth Road school was graded good, the second highest rating, in all elements of the inspection report, with pupils' behaviour, attendance and attainment recognised by inspectors.

The report of the inspection, on May 14 and 15, said the strengths of the school included the quality of the teaching and the ambition teachers have for their pupils.

The report also noted the teaching and the interesting ways in which subjects were taught to help pupils make good progress.

Leadership and governance of the school was also praised, with the inspectors stating the headteacher was "passionate about ensuring the very best for each and every child".

Inspectors said the school did not receive an outstanding rating because pupils in key stage 2 did not receive enough opportunities to write at length and to explore different kinds of writing and because teachers’ marking did not help pupils know well enough how to improve their work.

Howard Morris, chairman of governors at Cobham Free School, said: "This Ofsted report is an impressive achievement for the team, given the very short timescales and the fact that we have only been in our permanent site since November last year.

"This result is a reflection of the achievement of our pupils, the commitment of our talented staff, the school’s strong leadership and governance, and finally our very supportive parents.

"We have an exciting and rewarding journey ahead to deliver an outstanding all through school for Cobham children."
