Bexley borough's fire commander Richard Welch has begun a 13 day adventure solo cycle from John O Groats to Lands End.

Mr Welch, 42, who lives in Northumberland Heath, is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Nurses and begun the epic 603 mile journey on Saturday (June 7).

Mr Welch told News Shopper: "Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way.

"Lots of members of my family have died from cancer and last year I had a health scare.

"It just brings home the fact that these nurses do such an amazing job and they should be thanked."
