TODAY marks the beginning of National Bookstart and National Carers Week, with events happening throughout the week.

Here are my top five suggested items in the borough for under £5.

Tuesday, June 10

Hillingdon Carers’ Fair takes place at The Pavilions Shopping Centre, Uxbridge between 10am and 5pm. Information and advice about carer-related support in the borough.

Wednesday, June 11

To mark the celebration of National Bookstart Week, which aims to encourage families to read to their children every night, Ickenham Library is hosting a ‘My Hero’ Storytime event, 10-11am. Participants will also be able to listen to stories and try their hand at crafts, colouring and singing. Space is limited, so make sure you get there early.

Wednesday, June 11

Meet leading scientists at Brunel University to hear about their research into water-related problems across the world and innovative ways to tackle these issues. The free ‘Water, Water, Everywhere…’ event runs between 11:30am and 2:30pm at the university’s Antonin Artaud theatre, and includes a networking buffet after the presentation. Friday, June 13

Back at Ickenham Library, Ian Everett, branch manager of Waitrose, Gerrards Cross, will be giving an insight into the history of the high street store. The event is free and starts at 10am. To book, phone the library on 01895 558271.

Saturday, June 14

Swing by Coteford Junior School to visit their Summer Fair between 11am and 3pm. Expect an abundance of stalls and inflatables to keep the family entertained.
