The new mayor of Merton will cut a giant birthday cake this weekend to honour the 25th birthday of Merton Abbey Mills.

Councillor Agatha Akyigyina will do the honours tomorrow for the event which will feature children’s clay modelling, live music from the Merton Concert Band and a performance of Beauty and the Beast by the Colour House Theatre.

The market and shopping village on the banks of the Wandle will be celebrating 25 years since it was created in the historic buildings of the derelict Liberty’s print works.

The event will start from 11am and continue until 5pm and is free to enter.

Tickets to the theatre show cost £10.
