Elderly people were encouraged to conquer feelings of loneliness at a healthy eating coffee morning with other older people last month.

As part of a national initiative Waitrose, Give and Gain, 20 older people were invited by Age Concern Epsom and Ewell for a coffee morning and talk on healthy eating at the store.

Over coffee, sandwiches and healthy cake, guests got to know each other, with two new acquaintances talking for two hours and swapping telephone numbers.

Olivia Edwards, the charity’s chief officer, said "We specifically invited people that we know are affected by loneliness to meet, chat and discover the services we offer.

"Age Concern Epsom and Ewell offer a befriending service, Sunday teas and community companions and have access to other initiatives in the area where older people can meet up with others in a similar position.

"We are very grateful to Waitrose Epsom for holding the event and for providing such brilliant company for our guests."
