A six-year-old boy is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a van.

The accident happened at the junction of Baytree Avenue and Kingston Road, in Leatherhead, at 3.45pm.

A Surrey Police spokesman said that it has closed half of Baytree Avenue, but Kingston Road has not been closed and that heavy traffic in the area, caused by the crash, is starting to ease.

The boy has been taken to St George's Hospital, in Tooting, which specialises in trauma surgery, for treatment.
