Dozens of potential development sites in Gravesham revealed

This Is Local London: Campaigners say the greenbelt is under threat in Gravesham. Campaigners say the greenbelt is under threat in Gravesham.

A list of dozens of sites across Gravesham which could be in line for new housing development has been released.

The list of 78 has been put forward by landowners, developers and other interested parties as part of Gravesham Council’s Local Plan.

The plan details the authority’s long term strategy for development in the borough up to 2028 The council had identified a target of 4,600 new homes, but it has been suggested Gravesham could be required to accommodate more than 6,000.

The list of potential sites has been released in response to a request by government-appointed planning inspector Nigel Payne, who is expected to give his verdict on Gravesham’s plans in July.

The Kent arm of the Campaign to Protect Rural England criticised the list, claiming 32 sites are in protected greenbelt areas.

A statement said: “This shows greedy developers are after cheap sites rather than tackling eyes sores like the old Lord Street car park site.

“Gravesham is already facing a massive increase in housing development.”

A Gravesham Council spokesman said: “As part of the Local Plan process a number of sites were proposed by landowners, developers and others for consideration.

“Sites on the list do not have consent to be developed and the council has not commented on the list.

“Being on that list does not mean that any site will get planning consent.”

The list of proposed sites can be seen here.
