The construction of new homes in East Barnet is due to begin at the end of July, developers have announced.

Following Barnet Borough Council’s approval of three planning applications last summer, Spen Hill Developments Ltd has appointed Durkan to carry out the construction of its New Barnet Project.

The plans include a mews development on the former Optex site in Victoria Road, which will include family housing, and two four-bedroom properties further along the road.

There will also be a residential building with retail space on the ground floor in East Barnet Road.

In total there will be 31 new homes and 41 parking spaces in the area.

Mark Witham, of Spen Hill, said: “Having worked with the council, planning officers and members of the community through the application process it is great that work is underway.

“I am confident that Durkan are the team to provide the quality and the attention to detail that is needed to bring this scheme to life and accelerate the regeneration of New Barnet.”

East Barnet Councillors, Robert Rams, Barry Evangeli and Joanna Tambourides visited the site yesterday.

Speaking to the Times Series, Councillor Rams said: “It’s great to see family housing being built in the area. East Barnet and the surrounding areas are desperate for nice, large family houses and that’s exactly what this development will bring.”

Construction is scheduled to take 15 months, meaning the project should be completed by October 2015.
