A dead body was found in the River Thames in Kingston this afternoon.

Police, paramedics and the RNLI arrived at Canbury Gardens, following reports of a body found in the river just after 6pm.

Police at the scene said the body was an unidentified male, found by a boater. 

The man, believed to be elderly, was found between two boats in the Thames opposite Lower Ham Road.

Police cordoned off the body which was brought to shore.

One ambulance and two police vans arrived at the scene and people were turned away and diverted to Richmond Road.

Shortly before 8pm a forensic tent was put up by police and examiners arrived.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at approximately 5.55pm today, Wednesday, 14 May, to Canbury Gardens, Kingston, following reports of a body in the River Thames.

"The body is believed to be that of an elderly man. Formal identification is yet to take place.

"A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. Enquiries continue."
