Future of Swanley Working Men's Club in doubt as members vote to call time
The future of Swanley Working Men’s Club is up in doubt after members voted to sell the building and call it a day.
The club in the High Street has been going for more than a century and it once enjoyed a membership of more than 1,400.
That has now collapsed to fewer than 300, with only a small proportion of them said to attend regularly.
A ballot at the end of last month saw a majority of members vote in favour of selling the building to developers for around £1.1 million.
Some of the cash will be used to cover the club’s debts and members are also in line for a share of the proceeds.
There was an option to sell the building for a smaller sum in exchange for the developers constructing a new home for the club, but that was rejected.
The group’s executive committee has the final say on the club’s future.
The three-storey redbrick building has three full size snooker tables, a bar, a function room and a downstairs hall.
The working men’s club has been running there since 1911.
