A level crossing across a railway line that divides Ashtead has jammed yet again to the frustration of drivers.

Tineka Smith, whose partner lives on the Ashtead Common side of the tracks, said dozens of car had to wait because the barrier next to Ashtead Station has broke down.

Ms Smith said: "We are just sitting here. It’s jammed yet again. There’s a long queue of cars.

"If it keeps jamming, we don’t have any other way to leave. It’s not wise to keep it there."

Network Rail said the level crossing "failed" at 2.50pm and had been fixed by 4.05pm.

After a major breakdown in February, Network Rail said it was taking the issue very seriously and had engineers investigating how to reduce breakdowns.

MP Chris Grayling has surveyed hundreds of people on the Ashtead Common side of the tracks and said two thirds of them wanted to improve the existing crossing instead of creating a bridge.
